Happy Sunday!
If you’re following My Side Plot on Fable, you know our August book is Come and Get It by Kiley Reid 🐖
If you haven’t started yet, don’t worry! I’ll post a full review on September 2nd, so there’s still time to catch up.
Until then, here’s what I’ve recently shelved:
⏰ The Ministry of Time, Kaliane Bradley
This time travel sci-fi/romance/spy thriller/workplace drama was so close to being amazing. The tone was funny and the concept was incredible — the British government tries to assimilate expats from different centuries into modern life via an employee buddy system — BUT it was trying to do too much. The middle felt jumbled (and oddly slow?), and I think the whole book had a bit of an identity crisis. 3/5, because it was the most unique title I’ve read this year!
🦂The Familiar, Leigh Bardugo
This was my third Leigh Bardugo book, and she didn’t disappoint. It started slow, but my queen always delivers a haunting and magical atmosphere. Ultimately, I came for the spooky vibes and stayed for the love story. 4/5
On my TBR:
🏟 The Snap, Elizabeth Staple.
“Dangerous secrets. A toxic workplace. And an unsolved murder. . . . A football professional reckons with the choices that made her career in the boys’ club world of sports possible in this riveting and sharp Friday Night Lights meets I Know What You Did Last Summer debut”
This book was gifted to me by the author through work, and I can’t wait to give it a read and honest review. I mean look how sweet this note is!!! Elizabeth I already love you:
Not books but a few more recs for your week….
🔍 Murdle
Move over, Wordle! Murdle has fully taken over my life. It’s Clue 🤝 sudoku in the most
amazingaddictive way possible. You’re welcome!🧠 Not Everyone Has An Internal Monologue (Including My Husband), Boss Project
It blows my mind that 30%-50% of people live without an internal monologue. 30%-50%!!!! What would it be like without the incessant (often mean) voice in my head? Is it as peaceful as I imagine??? Do any of them have anxiety??? This quote alone has had me reeling for hours:
When thinking about a home renovation project, for example, he doesn’t have an inner voice that says, “I need a screwdriver.” Instead, he just sees the screwdriver in his mind’s eye.
🎀 ‘Demure’ Content Creator Can Pay for Gender Transition After the Trend Goes Viral, Variety
It’s always nice when a silly online trend leads to real-world positivity! For my fellow chronically online pals, how are you navigating the brat-to-demure spectrum? “Being “demure” — more of a vibe than a literal interpretation of the word — has now become somewhat of a lifestyle”
🎶 Chappell Roan can’t be stopped, LA Times
Nor should she be.! This article does a great job explaining the femininomenon that is Chappell Roan and how pop is reverting back to bold and celebratory (think Lady Gaga) from the cool and indie tome of the last decade (think Billie Eilish). “[I]t was pop show as shared public ritual, not pop show as private bedroom confession”.
🎮 The Precarious Online Lives of Young Men, Time
Once again, I’m urging you to check in on the men in your life! This survey spanned 6 months, over 1.5 million lines of chat logs, and more than 100 observed hours of male-dominate channels (my nightmare). “What we found was that, for young men, there is little distinction between “in real life” (IRL) and “online life.””
Last Thought:
Speaking of men…my thoughts and prayers have been with this particular man all week 👇
