Today My Side Piece turns three!
If you’ve been a subscriber since the beginning, you know how much this blog has evolved. This year alone has seen significant changes. I launched, tested, and ultimately shut down The Champagne Room. I took all of November off to write my first novel draft. Recently, I moved everything over to this new platform.
For the first time, My Side Piece also led me to new writing opportunities. The blog helped me land a full-time ad copy job, book freelance gigs, and give talks to students interested in pursuing writing.
Reflecting back, the trajectory has been clear. I spent the first year forming the habit. In year two I found my voice. This year was all about the craft.
Candidly, I’m not sure what comes next. The last few months have been a slog, and managing my usual writing routine with work, renovations, and social life is a struggle.
As usual, I’m teetering on the edge of burnout.
I decided to pull a few Oracle cards for inspiration. The below is meant to represent My Side Piece’s past, present, and future.

Emote! It’s better out than in. If you were thinking of making some magic, this is your sign to do it.
Sometimes we just need to realize how much we want something.
What do you believe you can do? It’s time to be ambitious.
To recommit, I’ve decided to completely disconnect for two weeks. No articles, no Hump Day Quickies, and no beating myself up for not making progress. Creativity comes in seasons, and, three years in, I finally feel like I’ve built a foundation that allows for taking breaks.
Lastly, here is a list of my favourite pieces since last June. Let me know if I missed any of yours, and here’s to another year of fun on the side!
